What It Is

Mixolydian with an added natural 7th passing tone between the b7 and the octave - the most commonly used of the bebop scales, also called the Bebop Dominant scale. Notes: D#, E#, F##, G#, A#, B#, C#, C##.

How It Functions

Turns a 7-note Mixolydian line into an 8-note line that lands a chord tone on every downbeat when played in straight eighth notes over a dominant 7th chord.

Mood & Character

Bright and propulsive - the extra passing tone gives dominant-chord lines a smoother, idiomatically 'jazz' forward motion.
