What It Is

Harmonic minor with a raised 4th degree, adding a second augmented-second gap (between the b3 and #4) alongside harmonic minor's own (between the b6 and 7). Notes: D, E, F, G#, A, Bb, C#. Also known as the Hungarian Minor scale.

How It Functions

The extra augmented second intensifies harmonic minor's already-dramatic sound while keeping its strong leading tone into the tonic.

Mood & Character

Dramatic and searching - two augmented-second gaps give it an even more intense, exotic color than plain harmonic minor.
