Lesson 1: The Musical Alphabet: Notes, Pitch, and the Octave

Every musical idea starts with pitch - how high or low a sound is. Music organizes pitch into a small, repeating set of named building blocks called notes. Once you know how those blocks work, everything else in this platform - scales, chords, keys - is just different ways of combining them.

Western music names pitches using just seven letters: A, B, C, D, E, F, G. Once you reach G, the pattern wraps back around to A again, one register higher. This repeating sequence is called the musical alphabet.

The pitch class most Western notation is anchored to - no sharps or flats in its key signature.

Between most letters, there's a note in between - marked sharp (#) or flat (b). That gives 12 distinct pitches before the letter names repeat, not 7. The same physical pitch can have two valid names depending on context - C# and Db are the same key on a piano. Two different names, one sound. Musicians call this an enharmonic equivalent.

Once you count through all 12 pitches, you land back on the same letter name you started with - just higher or lower. That distance is called an octave. A C two octaves up is still called C - it's a higher version of the same pitch class, not a new one.

The smallest possible distance between two notes is called a half step. Two half steps combine to make a whole step. These small distances - half steps and whole steps - are called intervals, and they're the actual building blocks scales and chords are made from. That's exactly what the next lesson digs into.
